GLP1 Injection - Global Shortage

There is a global shortage of GLP1 injections which are used in the management of Type 2 Diabetes but are also used for patients with Obesity.  We have around 200 people using these medications in our PCN.

The following are used locally and there are concerns regarding the supply of all of them but to different degrees.

  • Dulaglutide (Trulicity) - this is the most commonly used by us
  • Exenatide (Byetta / Bydureon)
  • Liraglutide (Victosa) - earlier risk of shortage
  • Lixisenatide (Lyxumia)
  • Semaglutide (Ozempic / Rybelsus) - earlier risk of shortage

We are being advised not to start new patients on these medications at this time.  We are also advised not to switch patients between different versions.

If you have run out or are running out please contact your surgery.  You may need an up to date HbA1c blood test before a decision can be made on the best course of action.
