Type 1 Diabetes Screening

There is currently no national screening programme for Type 1 Diabetes but this option is being explored by two major trials looking at the feasibility of screening in children and adults.

These studies are open to anyone but you may want to consider them especially if you have a family history of Type 1 Diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes is often diagnosed in an emergency situation but identifying those at risk early is hoped to enable the use of emerging immunotherapies, which can delay the development of the condition, as well as provide education and knowledge so children at risk and their parents/carers are aware of what symptoms to watch out for.

Children

(ages 2-17)

The ELSA Study is recruiting 70,000 children and young adults aged 2-17 years in the UK to explore the feasibility and benefits of screening for type 1 diabetes.

Children and young adults can have a simple finger stick blood test to find out their risk of developing type 1 diabetes in the future.

T1DRA (Type 1 Diabetes Risk in Adults Study) is a research study testing a small finger prick blood sample for markers of increased risk of Type 1 Diabetes.
